Save Money on Healthy Food

Most people few eating healthier as more costly. It's true, if you buy healthier foods, you might pay more, but you might not if you know what healthy is and you know what to look for.

For example, there are prepackaged health dinners or lean hot pockets that are healthier than tv dinners or pizza hot pockets, and they often cost more. The truth is, these aren't necessarily healthier alternatives. They may be healthier, but you could find fresher health food that you prepare yourself cheaper.

Instead of bringing a prepackaged healthy choice lunch or a hot pocket of any kind, eat leftovers of a healthy mean from the night before, make a sandwich, or make a fresh salad. They are cheaper than both the "healthy" or "not healthy" alternative and probably healthier than both, too.

Healthy food also fills you up faster. When you get filled up faster, you don't need to eat as much. How often have you eaten 2 cookies and had to go back for a third, fourth, fifth, etc. Now tell me how often you've eaten and apple and even had to go back for a second.

If you are overwhelmed by the price of produce, grow your own. You can plant a small garden and even just include 2 or three different vegetables and it would still help you save money. Plant an orange or apple tree (depending on where you live) and enjoy the fruit of your labor.

There are other alternatives as well. When vegetables are in season in your area you could buy from the local farmer's market. If you still couldn't manage the cost of fresh fruits and vegetables, buy frozen whenever you can and save a few bucks.

Finally, even if you spend exactly the same amount on the healthy food itself than you would have junk food, you can still save. The healthier you eat, the healthier you are, and the less likely you will get sick.

If you don't get sick you don't have to go to the doctors or pay for medicine. Even with insurance, you usually have to pay a co-pay at the doctors and you aren't insured for over the counter medicine. Eat healthy and save money!
