Kid Businesses: Ideas For Your Entrepreneurial Child
Kids love to earn their own money. On any given day, you can find a neighbor kid running a lemonade stand, or shoveling driveways to earn some extra money.
Unfortunately, kids can't just go out and get a job, so how do kids earn money when they're too young to get a real job?
Actually, the number of ways that kids can earn money has grown tremendously with the growth of the Internet, but some of the old fashioned ways still work as well. Here are some old fashioned, but still great ways your kids can earn money:
Chores - have them do some extra chores around the house for pay (I wouldn't recommend paying them for the chores they are already supposed to be doing, unless that's part of your current allowance system)
The old lemonade stand. What kid hasn't done some form of lemonade stand at some time in their life? The lemonade stand has been around for a long time, but it's still a great way to teach kids about money, and about business. Your kids will learn so many lessons, such as the cost of buying the ingredients that go into lemonade, selling a product, supply and demand, etc.
Babysitting - hey, no matter how technical our world gets, we will always need good babysitters, and this is still a great way for kids to learn responsibility.
Mowing lawns: Even with all the expensive lawn services available today, this is still a great way for kids to earn extra money. This can be something kids do occasionally just to earn a few extra dollars, or if they have an entrepreneurial streak, they can make a small business out of mowing lawns and shoveling snow. This is how a lot of those big expensive lawn services got started!
Dog walking, and pet sitting - we live in such a busy society that our pets get left at home for long time periods, so this is a great way for kids to earn extra money and for Fido to get the exercise and companionship he needs
In addition to all of these tried and proven ways for kids to make money, with the growth of the Internet, there are now tons of new ways for kids to make money. Now kids can start their own online businesses to earn some extra cash.
Because the Internet doesn't have the traditional age barriers that kids face when they try to get a "real" job, there are many ways that kids can earn money online, including:
Write a blog - there are many ways to make money with blogs, such as Adsense, promoting affiliate products, creating your own ebook to sell, etc. And with free blog sites like Blogger, Wordpress.com and Squidoo, there are virtually no costs to get started.
eBay - sell old toys, clothes, CDs and video games online, especially at Christmas time. what a great way to get your kids to clean their room and to earn money at the same time!
Sell websites or graphics - a lot of kids are very creative, or very technologically advanced. Put that creativity to work! There are kids that are making a lot of money creating avatars, banners and other graphics for other people. Some kids are building complete websites for sale!
When it comes to making money online, don't underestimate your kids. They know computers and the Internet better than many adults, and they are creative and unafraid to take risks. I expect the number of kids businesses to keep growing as kids realize the potential of their computer and internet skills.
